Hello, everyone! It’s Maricar Donato here, writing to you with excitement about the intersection of technology and tourism. Recently, I had the privilege of speaking with the Daily Mirror about this very topic, and I’d love to expand on the ideas I shared during that conversation.
As a proud ambassador of the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA) and a passionate advocate for all things travel, I want to share my thoughts on a critical topic shaping our industry: the integration of new technologies by tour guides.
In my recent discussions with peers from around the globe, one message resounds louder than ever—the future of tourism is digital, and we need to embrace it now.
My Journey with Technology
I’ve always believed in being a student of the world, and adopting technology is just another lesson. A few years ago, I began incorporating digital tools into my tours. From mobile apps that let guests explore additional content to virtual tours during the pandemic, I saw firsthand how technology could connect us even when physical travel wasn’t possible.
As we emerge into this new era, I’m more committed than ever to leveraging technology—not as a crutch, but as a way to redefine the art of guiding. My hope is to inspire fellow guides to embrace this shift with confidence.
Challenges Are Opportunities
Of course, adopting technology isn’t without its challenges. Not all guides are tech-savvy, and investing in tools can be daunting. However, these hurdles aren’t insurmountable. Training programs, like those supported by WFTGA, can empower guides to become tech-ready. Collaboration with local tourism boards and tech firms can also make resources more accessible.
A Call to Action
Fellow guides, this is our moment. The world is moving fast, but we’re storytellers, culture-sharers, and ambassadors of our lands. Let’s use technology to amplify these roles and create experiences that travellers will cherish for a lifetime.
